Chicago Fire Department Temporarily and Intermittently Changes Radio Calls to 800 MHz Talkgroups Possibly Due to Atmospheric Conditions Affecting UHF 400 MHz Frequencies

During mid-June 2022, Chicago Fire Department radio calls were switched to the 800 MHz talkgroups that are also available to Chicago Fire Department operations. The reason for the switch was possibly due to atmospheric conditions that were causing interference on the UHF 400 MHz frequencies.

Degradation to reception was also observed on public safety scanning radios in Arlington Heights with increased difficulty understanding radio messages.
